We started off tonight, as promised, by completing the chariot races from last week:

We then played a game of Beach Safety, The walls of the hall were designated as

  1. Swim between the flags
  2. Lifeguards
  3. Shallow water
  4. No swimming

Then the Cub Scouts were given the following actions:

  1. Rough surf – act out being caught in rough surf
  2. Swim with a friend – find a friend and “swim” together
  3. Adult supervision – run to an adult/Leader
  4. Shark attack – Cubs to run away from shark (Leader)
  5. Need help – arm in the air and wave

A leader called out as per above and Cubs ran to the designated part of the hall or perform the action.

We followed this we a reading from The Wol Cub’s Handbook, originally published in 1916, which told the true story of an accident at Niagra Falls in 1912. The Cub Scouts learnt how through the use of knots, for instance the bowline, perhaps the outcome that day would have been different.

After the story had been told we discussed water safety and the buddy system, before practising working with a buddy in the Back to Back race. The Cub Scouts were paired off and stood back to back with linked arms, they had to make their way to one of the hall and then back again without turning around.

Our last discussion of the night was about how to rescue a person from the water, and how not to get yourself in to danger while doing so.

With all that done it was on to more games. Firstly we played Cubs to the Rescue, in the middle of the hall was placed a towel, pool noodle, rope and a stick. One Cub Scout from each team played at being the victim each time whilst the others had to take it in turns to rescue them using the item called out by a leader.

Then we played Over the River, a rope was placed in the hall to represent the river and the Cub Scouts had to jump over this river carrying a ball, turn and throw the ball to the next player. Once all were over the river they repeated the process to get back again.

With a few minutes spare we also played On The Buses. Two rows of chairs were setup opposite each other, 2 less chairs than there were Cub Scouts. A leader then called out either the name of a road or a street, when a street was called the Cub Scouts had to swap seats with the person opposite them, when it was a road they all had to run to the end of the hall and back. Each time the Cub Scouts moved the two without a seat got a chance to get themselves a seat on the bus. The game certainly left everyone tired!

The night ended with 4 people getting their Waterwise Badges, those of you who have not completed the tasks yet can still bring them in to get your badges.
