Tonight started with an investiture, as we welcomed the newest Cub Scout in the world to Paradise Point Group:
Well done, and we hope you enjoy your time in Red Six.
The nights activities started with a game of ‘Around the Moon’, with the sixes lined up behind a cone they placed their hands on the person in fronts shoulders. It was then a race over to and around another cone before returning to the starting point, where the last person in the line would drop off and the rest would repeat until only 1 person was left. We played the game outside at first, whilst indoor activities were setup, and then played again later in the evening indoors:
It took a little while for everybody to understand the game was not just about speed, but they had to work as a team too. If the lines broke apart during the game they were out.
The nights main activities had the Cub Scouts working in their Six’s to play golf and build a Lunar Rover:
Apollo 14 – Golf On The Moon
During the second of two Moon walks Alan Shepard improvised a golf club and hit two balls across the Lunar surface. The Cub Scouts task was to play a few rounds of crazy golf, whilst wearing thick leather gloves and using only one hand just like Alan Shepard.
Apollo 15 – Test the Lunar Rover
The Cub Scouts had to build a Lunar rover from bottle caps, wood and nails.
Everybody really enjoyed using the drill and the hammers!
We followed this with a talk about how we can all learn from our experiences before playing the final game of the night a variation of ‘Keepy Uppy’. In this version the Cub Scouts had to keep the command module, a ball, up in space by hitting it in the air, nobody could hit two times in a row so it was vital that rather than randomly knocking the ball about they had to work out a strategy, after a few minutes they organised themselves in to a circle and their success rates improved.
This left us with just enough time to award a few badges before everyone went home, next week is our final Moon week which will be followed by our visit up to the NASA exhibition in Brisbane.
