Tonights warm up game was Rocket Relay, the Cub Scouts took it in turns to stand on the launchpad and after a countdown the first of each Six has to run and touch each wall of the wall before returning to the launchpad where the next Cub Scout was standing ready to be tagged and lunched too. We repeated the game using the 4 corners of the hall instead of the walls.
After this we went straight on with the Moon program, and because we had a full set of parent helpers this week we were able to run 3 activities at once and have the Cub Scout in smaller groups which really helped them to all work together in their teams.
Activity 1 – Apollo 11: Balloon Rockets
Having landed on the Moon last week the Cub Scouts needed to help the crew of Apollo 11 return safely home to Earth, they did this by building a balloon rocket to travel between the Moon and Earth (in this case represented by two chairs).
Activity 2 – Apollo 12: Precision landing and lunar survey
Like with the Apollo 11 landings last week the Cub Scouts had to land their Lunar Landers on a target, once safely on the Moon they had to conduct a survey. They were show a tray full of space related items and given 30 seconds to memorise them, after that the tray was covered and the Cub Scouts had to recall as many items as they could.
Activity 3 – Apollo 13: Get Home Safely!
Shortly in to their trip the crew of Apollo 13 experienced an explosion in one of their oxygen tanks, the race was then on to keep the crew alive until they could loop around the moon and get back to Earth. The Cub Scouts has to use a box of craft materials to come up with a way of connecting the CO2 scrubbers from one part of the vessel, the command module, to the systems in the Lunar Module.
With these three tasks completed we had time for a final game called ‘Equipment Transfer’. During their flight the crew of Apollo 13 had to transfer equipment from Lunar Module to the Command module, the Cub Scouts would need to do the same. In the center of the room a hoop was placed with a number of balls and bean bags within it. The Sub Scouts paired off and each had a hoop in the corners of the room. There task was to 1 by 1 run to the equipment and return it to their hoops, once all the equipment was collected they were able to steal from other teams. After a few minutes the game was stopped and the team with the most equipment won.
We were able to play the game a couple of times before it was time to pack up and have a short discussions on what it means to “Use Resources Wisely’ before it was time to go home.
