As part of the 50th anniversary of the Moon landings we started a 4 week moon program tonight, one that will end with our visit up to the NASA exhibition in Brisbane in September. We started the program off with a little astronaut training, the Cub Scouts teamed up and then took it in turns to run down the hall where they needed to jump a rope, bounce a ball and toss a bean bag 10 times each before returning to tag the next player.

The Cub Scouts were then introduced to the 3 astronauts who took part in the Apollo 11 mission, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. Two of whom were part of the Scout movement, with Neil Armstrong carrying a World Scout badge all the way to the moon and back. We took this opportunity to looks at the Boys Scouts of America oath and then the new Australian Scouts Promise and Law. In particular we discussed how ‘Face Challenges with Courage’ could have helped the astronauts with their mission.

We then broke in to two groups to build a Lunar Lander and a re-entry and splashdown module. After constructing each the Cub Scouts had the chance to try and land on the Moon and then to make a successful splashdown safely back on Earth.

We unfortunately ran out of time for creating the rockets this week, we plan on starting next week at 18:15 in order to fit that activity in.
