We mostly completed the Waterwise Badge this week, there are still the water use sheets to bring back next term. Remember you need to record you water meter twice, once at the start and again 7 days later.

We started the night with a game, the Cub Scouts had to run and collect a random card which listed an action which either wasted or saved water. If they go a water wasting action they had to go and collect the number of marbles relating to how much water they wasted. Once all Cub Scouts had run then the winner was the team with the least marbles. Unfortunately at the end of the game I noticed the words ‘No Memory Card” flashing on the camera so we have no photos of that!

Once we had played the game a few times it was time to out outside where 6 difference experiments had been set up, 3 each representing surface tension and capillary action.

Surface Tension:

  • Speedboat Matchsticks
  • Run Away Pepper
  • Bubbles

The Cub Scouts got to see how the oils in washing up liquid broke the surface of the water while the rest of the water pulled the floating objects away from the soap. The bubbles could be seen to be round because when air is blown inside a bubble it is pushed outwards in all directions. This causes bubbles to become round. Bubbles are made up of a thin film or skin of soapy water. This thin film/skin that holds the air inside of a bubble is stretchy and when the bubble is stretched; it pulls tightly.

Capillary Action Experiment

  • Paper Towel Experiment
  • Celery and Food Colouring
  • Straw Experiment

Two of the experiments take time to work, the celery on was taken home and over a few days you should start to see the colour being displayed within the celery itself. Well perhaps not for those that picked the green food colouring, but it is there even if you can’t see it. The paper towel experiment was already showing success by the end of the night, with the blue and yellow colouring being drawn in to the central cup where it mixed to for green.

With the experiements completed one of our Cub Scouts showed the resource he created towards his Grey Wolf badge, and the other Cub Scouts then got to spend sometime working on them.

The word search was a clear favourite amongst them, and a few adults too!

With that we reached the end of the night, and the end of the term! Again don’t worry if you missed out on the badge work, there were many people away, as you can complete the tasks at home and bring in photos of what you did. Just ask for a work sheet when you come back next term if you want to complete the badge still.
