This week we took some time to tidy up most of the loose ends left from the Citizenship badge, and re-affirm a few of the important points we have covered over the last few weeks.

As usual however we started with a game, the Scouts were all blindfolded and then had to arrange themselves in to height, age and alphabetical order. Then while still blindfolded they were given a joined rope and had to work as a team to try and create a square shape, whilst always holding on to the rope.

Following on from this we sat down for a talk on ways we could be more environmentally friendly and a continuation of the discussion we had after our walk around Runaway Bay on the ways people have impact the environment, along we any positive actions that could be undertaken.

The final activity of the night was a game that required some planning, teamwork and thought:

Mouldy Food

  • Place a bottle with a reasonable lip in the centre of a circle, approximately six metres in diameter.
  • The bottle should be filled to within a few centimetres of the top.
  • A second circle one metre in diameter should be drawn around the bottle.
  • The challenge is to remove the bottle from both circles without spilling the contents and without entering either circle

The teamwork aspect quickly went out the door as the boys soon went about their own ways to try and remove the bottle, whilst the girls did come up with a solution together. The boys general idea was to lasso the bottle, and quite amazingly after a number of tries one did manage it. He was just as surprised as everyone else. The girls took the idea of using a knot halfway through a rope, lowering the knot over the bottle and tightening it by pulling on both ends. This was a good idea, but with only one bit of rope the knot tended to pull to one side knocking the bottle over before they could lift it. At the last moment they changed over to using two ropes, so the knot could close evenly over the top, and were then able to life the bottle out.
