The night started with the Indigenous game ‘Turi Turi’, a long rope was swished from side to side on the floor and the Cub Scouts took it in turn to jump over the rope. The aim was to make it to 10 jumps, and after a few practise goes almost everyone made it. Then it was competition time and the sixes took it in turn to see how many jumps their six could complete as a team, this time Red Six just took the victory with 8 jumps.

Their then followed a discussion on indigenous Australians, and as usual the Cub Scouts impressed with their existing knowledge which was in many cases far more than the leaders. It is great to see this aspects of history and society are being taught much better in schools these days. We had a talk about the Yugambeh people, who inhabited South East Queensland and covered topics such as:

  • Shelter
  • Food
  • Clothing
  • Art
  • Tool
  • Symbols
  • Flags

The Cub Scouts then got to use this knowledge, and artistic skills, to complete a Workbook. These were sent home to be completed for those that did not have time on the night.

Our shortened night was rapidly coming to and end, but we still had time for another game called Tarnambai. The Cub Scouts played in the Sixes with the aim being to roll a ball down the hall so that it passed a line on the floor at the other end, but at the same time to run after it and pick it up after the line but before it reached the wall. Once picked up they had run back and pass the ball on to the next player, if it hit the wall they were disqualified. After two rounds the game was changed so instead of running the Cub Scouts had to hop.

Next week we will be celebrating a 160th birthday, nobody managed to work out what the celebration was for on the night so everyone was asked to look it up.

We are expecting to be back in our usual hall at Paradise Point, and regular time for 18:30 – 20:00 again, if so we will also be back to running the full program again.
