If you were out and about in Paradise Point on Tuesday evening and wondering where the delicious smells which were wafting through the air were coming from it wonder no more. Yes it was the 2019 Paradise Point Scouts Ready Steady Cook competition!
This year the teams had to blind pick the equipment they would get to cook on, the nationality whose dish they would need to prepare and one mystery ingredient that had to feature in both courses.
- Team 1 – gas burners, Indian and cream
- Team 2 – BBQ, Chinese and maple syrup
They also had a budget of $20 and a time limit of 45 minutes for the mains and 30 minutes for the desert, this included preparation, cooking ans serving.
Points were awarded based on preparation, presentation and taste.
Team 1 Menu
Team 2 Menu
As you can see both teams picked some complex options, with neither going for easy choices. It was now time to ready… steady… cook!!!
Good job everyone, and honestly the air was filled with the aroma of marinades and spice. It was going to be a tricky job for the judges tonight.
First up to the judging table was Team 2:
Yes those plates are looking pretty empty by the end, looks like everyone enjoyed!
Then Team 1 presented their first course:
A very warming dish indeed!
Everyone was excited their their first course had gone down so well, but there was no time to rest as dessert was to be ready on the table in a little under 30 minutes now.
As you can see one Scout was spotted in the kitchen washing up even!
The final products certainly all looked good enough to eat, which was fortunate:
All that was left now were final deliberations by the judges, and of course the cleaning up!
Once everything was cleaned up and put away the Scouts gathered in the hall to hear the news.
Feedback was given, all dishes were superb and presentations had been lovely. Team 1’s main dish was perhaps a little spicey, but they had done a great job in particular making their own bread from raw ingredients. Team 2 had overcooked their pudding just a little, 30 second less and it would have been perfect… all so close!
The first two judges had given even points, so it was a tie and all down to the final judge… who was going to be crowned the 2019 winners…..

Team 1 took the title by 1 point, the quality of what was presented by both teams tonight was so close it was virtually impossible to determine a winner. With the standard of food so high it was only the smallest of details that made a difference between the two.
Massive congratulations to both teams, in particular it was noted for those of you who took part in the 2018 event the improvement over the last 12 months has been immeasurable. Also a massive thank you to our judges, we literally could not have done it without you.
Well done everyone!
