With Scout camp in May, and holidays between then and now, this week it was time for the Scouts to brush up on some Scout & Camp crafts. This is also the first Scout camp for 3 members, 2 of whom have only been used to the luxuries of Cub camp so far.

However as usual the night started with a game, Crossed Circles. Each Scout started with an empty circle drawn on the floor, they each received a different colour piece of chalk and had 60 seconds to put as many crosses in any circle other than their own. With no other rules both chaos, and cunning, ensued.

After the floor was cleaned it was time to check the patrol box, this goes with the Scouts on camp and should have everything they need to prepare food for themselves. It is their duty to check the contents before they leave, once they are at camp it’s too late to replace anything that’s missing and they would have to make do. A number of items needed replenishing, and a couple replacing, so a list was made up and presented to Eagle.

Then it was time to get the Queenslander tent sorted. Given it was the first time for many of the Scouts we spent the rest of the evening practising the knots required, specifically the square lashing:

The girls caught on quickly and on their second attempt produced a lashing that all the other Scouts could hang on without it slipping. The boys… well at the moment they may just be sleeping in an open field. We will be going over this again no doubt before camp!
