An important night tonight as we covered two big topics in a fun way. We started the night with a Joey Parade and a going up ceremony.
The first game of the night was run by one of our cubs, as part of his Gold Boomerang badge word, a game of Statue Tiggy which is very similar to ‘stuck in the mud’
Game helps to show the processes of bullying and the emotions that can be felt. It also highlights support required.
- Pack runs around and one person is ‘it’. This represent the kid with bullying behaviour
- The “it” Cub chases the other Cubs and when a cub is tagged, the tagged Cub must freeze.
- The rest of the pack supports the frozen victim to free them, by crawling under their legs.
Afterwards we had a talk about the game, were the same Cubs targeted over and over, did anybody hide or not take part in the unfreezing and related how these actions relate to the processes of bullying.
With these ideas fresh in our minds it was time to update our Pack Code, this is a set of rules and ideas generated by the Cub Scouts about how they think we should work together to get the most out of Scouting. There were some excellent suggestions and this is the list that they came up with:
Everyone will be getting a copy of this soon!
Last activity of the night required us to split up, the Gold Boomerang Cubs went with Eagle to complete some map work they started a few weeks ago, whilst everybody else stayed to continue out discussion on bullying and breaking the cycle. We then put our new knowledge in to action by creating a wall of hands, each cub made a carboard cutout of their own hand and wrote on each finger one thing they might do to stop an act of bullying.
We will add a photo of the completed wall once it has all been stuck together. If you want to read up more Scouts Australia have a dedicated site for the topic, visit Scouts Australia Breaking the Cycle.
Rapidly running out of time now, it is amazing how quickly 90 minutes can go, we still had time for a game of gladiator. One Cub had to try and dribble their soccer ball from one end of the hall to the other, and the same time the other cubs had to try and knock the ball away using their own soccer balls.
Afterwards we had a quick chat on how it felt to be going down the center with all the other Cubs ‘attacking’ along with how it felt to be the attacker operating in a large group.
Next week we will be trying ‘knot’ to get in a tangle…
