A huge program of games and activities tonight!
After the opening parade we started the night with a map symbols relay race. The Cubs lined up in their sixes and took it in turns to run to the end of the hall to collect a printed map symbol and bring it back to their group. Once all the symbols were collected they had to match each symbol to its corresponding meaning on the legend chart.
Then already suitably out of breath from running Eagle had a discussion with the Cubs about maps, why we have them, how they are used and some of the features you’ll find on a map.
As much as the Cubs enjoyed the rest it was soon time to play the next game, Trail sign relay. This was similar to the last game except the Cubs had to collect a matching pair of trail sign and its meaning before returning to their Six. There are quite a number of different trail signs that can be used, here are a few examples:

The Cubs then split up in to their Boomerang groups to undertake age related activities. The Bronze and Silvers got to create their own trail signs with sticks and stones in the hall, while the Gold level went outside the hall to create a trail for the others to follow later on. The Bronze group also got to discuss what items they might take with them on a day hike, while the Silvers and Gold gained some experience using a map.
As soon as the Cubs were back from following the trail set out by the Golds we had a little bit of time left for one of the older Cubs to present his Grey Wolf resource, this time it was a Snakes and Ladders style game based upon the Jungle Book stories. The other Cubs enjoyed a quick game before it was time to pack up for the closing ceremony.
Lastly after we closed the night with a rendition of Happy Birthday for Eagle and 2 Cubs, and presented 4 of our Cubs with their 1 year badges.
Did we really get through all that in just one night!
