Tonight we celebrated Lord Baden-Powell’s (BP), the founder of the Scouts movement, birthday some 162 years ago on the 22nd February 1857.
To celebrate the Cubs got to learn a few details about BP’s life, from his time at Charterhouse School through his adventures in Africa and on to the formation of the Scout movement after the first camp on Bownsea Island, England on August 1st 1907.
Of course the whole night wasn’t about history and we got to play a lot of games too! Paper rock throwing, poison ball, hopping obstacle race and frightened dear to name a few.
After all this the Cubs needed a rest, so one of our older Cubs read out her Grey Wolf reflection. This is a new part to the Grey Wolf badge where each individual gets to express how they feel about completing the requirements for the highest badge in Cub Scouts.
Then we had a talk from another Cub about lots of historic badges and memorabilia from Scouting history here in Australia, you can see the photo at the top of the page. This included lots of badges that you can’t get anymore, a real slice of history!
The Cubs also got to see a 30 year old uniform from the UK, the hat was particularly popular!
Everyone noticed the purple World Scouts badge, the same badge that unites Scouts across the world.
We ended the night we some badge presentations. We had a Level 2 Masks and a Local History badge to award, and everybody got the new Scouts Australia badge to go on their uniforms.
We cover a few badges each year during camps and our weekly meetings, however Cub Scouts are free to complete any badges they like in their own time. All you need to do is take a look through your Yellow Book, which lists all the badges and their requirements, and then let a leader know which one you are doing before you start it.
Next week we will be doing activities based on navigation and trails!
