A few of our Cubs enjoyed their first night at Scouts today, as part of their linking process. Cubs can currently start this process after their 10th birthday, and it should be completed before their 11th.

The requirements for linking are:

1. Attend four Scout Meetings / Activities

2. During talks with the Scout Leaders:

  • Show a knowledge, understanding and acceptance of the Scout Promise and Law
  • Get to know the other Scouts and Leaders in the Troop
  • Discuss the Patrol System and Troop Council (Section Operation).

3. Take part in an activity with some Scouts

4. Learn and be able to demonstrate the following knots:

5. Describe the Australian Flag and how to use it:

  • Hoist the flag
  • Break the flag

6. Know how to report an emergency:

  • Understand the importance of this
  • Know the first steps to control bleeding

7. Discuss the Scout Award Scheme with your Patrol Leader

8. Discuss the safety precautions of camp tools with your Patrol Leader

Tonight they covered 3 of the knots, with a ‘homework’ task to see who can master the rolling hitch, they discussed how Scouts it different to Cubs and took part in the opening and closing ceremonies. They also got to have a look at the current award system, and again could see how differs from the system used in Cubs.

Everybody already wanted to get started working towards that first Pioneer cord, I’m sure they will all reach it before too long!

Next week some more of the requirements will be covered.
